If you are searching for a showstopping piece of Native American jewelry, you have found one. This is a large Calvin Begay Naja pendant with stunning inlay work. The level of detail in this pendant is beyond words.
Calvin Begay is famous for these starry night pueblo scenes. By hand-cutting and inlaying different stones, these artists can create a picture. The word 'picture' does not do this pendant justice. Work of art is a much more fitting term to describe what the Navajo artists have created here. They used picture jasper to create the pueblo buildings with tiny pieces of black jet for the windows and doors. The nighttime sky is also jet but has many round pieces of silver that represent stars. These artists used narrow cuts of cultured opal for shooting stars. There is also a single triangular piece of opal set on both sides of the Naja, in the middle of the jasper. Both triangular pieces are outlined in jet. The center of this pendant has green turquoise, along with tiny pieces of other stones inlaid in a streak across the sky. The bail is inlaid to match, giving this pendant a complete look. A tremendous amount of time and work went into creating this gorgeous display. Remember, every stone is cut and fit in place by hand.
Of course, such a striking pendant needed some nice silverwork as well. The outer border of this Naja has a jagged Southwestern design that helps frame the inlay work. Turn the bail around to its backside and you will find another Southwestern adornment. This is an element that no one except you will see but is another testament to the attention to detail in this piece.
This Calvin Begay Naja pendant is quite large. It is 2 1/2" across and 3 1/4" from the top of the bail to the bottom. Speaking of the bail, it has a large opening that is perfect for a nice set of beads. Pair this pendant with a substantial chain or set of beads and you will have a sensational necklace to die for!
