Cool Blue Kazakhstan Turquoise with Hand-Built Silver Details

Gary Glandon handmade this pendant around a long, softly pointed Golden Hills turquoise stone. Its shape and pale blue coloring inspired the name “Raindrop.” Dark brown matrix branches across the stone in a loose web, with denser markings near the pointed top and along the lower edge.

Golden Hills turquoise comes from the Altyn-Tyube deposit in Kazakhstan. The name Altyn-Tyube translates to “golden hill,” which is where the stone’s trade name comes from. This turquoise is known for cool shades of sky blue and periwinkle, often paired with reddish-brown or chocolate-colored matrix. Its coloring has a softer appearance than many bright blue turquoise varieties, making it easy to recognize.

Gary set the stone in a smooth sterling silver bezel and surrounded it with twisted silver wire. Small silver balls follow portions of the outside edge, adding detail without hiding the shape or pattern of the turquoise.

A separate diamond-shaped piece of silver connects the pendant to the bail. This small detail creates a transition between the stone and the polished bail while allowing the pendant to move freely on a compatible chain.

The pendant measures just under 2 inches long, including the bail, and approximately 3/4 inch wide. It was handmade in the jewelry workshop at Stagecoach.
